Health books – what were the best sellers of 2019?

2020.01.01

Happy New Year!
Thank you for your support again this year.

Olympic year 2020 has begun.
How was the year 2019 for you?

Recently, book distributor giants Nippon Shuppan Hanbai Inc. (Nippan) and Tohan Corporation
had announced their annual bestsellers for 2019 (November 2018 to November 2019),
respectively.

Both of them were the same overall, with Kirin Kiki’s “Issai nariyuki: Words by Kirin Kiki”
(Bungei Shunju).
It is a compilation book of quotations written by Kirin Kiki when she was alive, on “Living,”
“Family,” “Illness, Body,” “Work,” “Women, Men,” and “Performing Works.” The last million
seller in the Heisei period was this “Issai nariyuki: Words by Kirin Kiki”.

Best selling Health books for 2019 were about “diet” and “eyes”

On the other hand, the following books are among the best sellers of the year among health
books:

Dr. Hiroyuki Kobayashi’s ” ‘Longevity miso soup’ developed by a doctor” (Publisher: Ascom)
Dr. Zenji Makita, “Diet taught by a doctor: The most powerful textbook: 68 ways of eating
correctly from a medical standpoint by studying 200,000 people” (Publisher: Diamond)
Mr. Rui Hiramatsu’s, “In just three minutes a day, you can have better eyes! Gabor Eye”
”(Publisher:SB Creative)
Mr. Yasutaka Hayashida’s “28 amazing photos that improve your eyes just by looking at them
for one minute a day” (Publisher:Ascom)

The theme of Kobayashi and Makita’s books is “diet”, and the theme of Hiramatsu and
Hayashida’s books is “eye”.
Diets are important for everyone, and eyes may become more tired as more time is spent
watching smartphones and computers.

Also, Dr. Kobayashi’s ” ‘Longevity miso soup’ developed by a doctor” was released in June
2018, Dr. Makita’s “Diet taught by a doctor: The most powerful textbook” was released on
September 2017, Dr. Hiramatsu’s “In just three minutes a day, you can have better eyes! Gabor
Eye” was published in March 2018, and Professor Hayashida’s “28 amazing photos that

improve your eyes just by looking at them for one minute a day” was published in March 2017,
so all are long sellers.

How to tackle self-medication

Looking at the health books that are selling, it seems like everyone is looking for something that
is easy to incorporate into their lives.

Recently, I have frequently heard the term “self-medication”.
WHO (World Health Organization) defines self-medication as “taking responsibility for one’s
own health and taking care of mild physical problems yourself.”
In other words, protect your own health.
To do so, it is essential to have the right information about health. Books can help you develop
the knowledge you need.
To practice self-medication, it is also necessary to know your own health condition, such as
regularly having a medical checkup and checking your weight and blood pressure at home.

With the beginning of the new year, it’s a good idea to start with something healthy.
